The prairie rose, state flower of North Dakota, is one of the many flowers found in the park. It blooms in late May or early June. NPS photo by Joe Bruce. Through the spring and summer, beautiful flowers bloom in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From pasque flowers to prickly pear cactus, there are amazing colors on display! The overall purpose of the proposed Dakota Grassland Conservation Area is to preserve, at a landscape scale, the ecological integrity of the area’s mixed-grass prairie, tallgrass prairie, prairie pothole wetlands, and riparian woodlands with the support of the associated ranching culture.

Noun ()An extensive area of relatively flat grassland with few, if any, trees, especially in North America. * *:It was not far from the house; but the ground sank into a depression there, and the ridge of it behind shut out everything except just the roof of the tallest hayrick. Grasslands National Park (in Canada) and the American Prairie Reserve (in the US) are bringing back bison to graze selected areas of prairie. This grazing will rehabilitate and restore habitat for many plant and animal species and species at risk, such as the endangered sage grouse.

The prairie biome is a fascinating place, with grass as its main source of vegetation. This area of grassland is typically located between a forest and a desert and may have a tropical or temperate climate, depending on its continent. A wide range of animals and birds live in the prairie biome. The prairie grasslands begin with the Great Plains at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and extend all the way to the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern part of the country. The Rocky Mountains prevent moist air from moving over the Great Plains, and this "rain shadow" helps to keep the prairie grasslands extremely dry.
